COUNSELING CENTER

The Society of Italian Americans Scholarship has a $1,000 scholarship annually to students enrolling in college or university in the fall following graduation. Applicants must have at least one Italian ancestor. Deadline of April 1st.

Vivint Smart Home Scholarship – $5,000 awarded to student enrolling in college by Fall 2017 and planning on selecting one of the listed majors. Applicants are required to submit a video. Deadline of April 1st.

SPORTS

Softball Tryouts will be in the West gym today and Wednesday.   JV will be from 3:30-5:30 and varsity will be from 5-7.

MISC

Attention all seniors … Congratulations to all senior students who have earned 5 semesters of A grades in Business and Technology courses as they qualify to receive Business and Technology department honors.  A list of all students earning this honor has been posted outside Business Department classes in B wing. Please check the list for accuracy and report any potential errors to any Business and Technology teacher. Once, again congratulations for a job well done!

COUNSELING CENTER

William Butterworth Foundation Scholarship – Recipients can receive $2,000 per school year and scholarship is renewable for four years ($8,000) if GPA of 2.5 is maintained. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community service. Deadline of March 16th.

Paul A. Peterson Computer Science Scholarship – Applicant must major in computer studies at a Midwest vocational school, technical school, junior college or 4-year college. Scholarship up to $500 per year and is renewable for four years. Deadline of April 7th.

SPORTS

Girls Soccer tryouts will be today at 3:30 pm.  Meet in the Coolidge gym and use the east door.  You must have a physical and parent permission form turned in to the Athletic Office.  Be prepared for indoor/outdoor practice.  Any questions see Coach Schilb or Coach Sanchez.

COUNSELING CENTER

Juniors–You will need to start applying for college in a few short months!  To help you get ready, we will have a local college fair right here at Moline High School tonight from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the main hallway by the “M”.  Augustana College, Black Hawk College, Scott Community College, St. Ambrose University, Trinity College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Western Illinois University Quad Cities, and a representative from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission will be here to answer your questions about how to apply, financial aid and scholarships, programs, and activities!  All Moline High School students and their families can take advantage of this great opportunity.

Sadie’s tickets are on sale in the bookstore through today. The dance will be held at the Quad City Botanical Center on Saturday, Feb 25th from 7 – 10 pm.

You’re invited to the Moline Public Library tonight for a Chocolate Festival at 6:00. Enjoy lots of chocolate and have fun.  This is a correction to a previous announcement about this event.

It is voting time for the Youth Choice awards for literature.  If you have read at least 4 of the 20 books nominated for the Abraham Lincoln Youth Choice Award, please vote in the Library Media Center by March 15th.

There will be no Night Classes today after school due to Parent/Teacher Conferences.

National Honor Society applicants–Your applications are due today in the Counseling Center by 2:15.

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME): Rock Island Post – One-year, two-year and four-year scholarships are being offered to qualified students who are pursuing a baccalaureate degree in the fields of engineering and physical sciences. Deadline of March 27th.

Illinois-Iowa Section of the American Chemical Society: Donald Kiser Memorial Scholarship -One year, non-renewable $1,000 scholarship for applicants pursuing studies in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering at an accredited postsecondary institution. Deadline of March 31st.

Quad City area libraries are offering a YouTube Contest for grades 6-12. Create a 3-5 minute video for a chance to win $100. Entries are due March 1st. See your local library for more information and an entry form.

Encore has returned from a successful weekend at the state tournament for speech at the Peoria Civic Center. Here are the results:

Junior, Isaac Waddell placed 12th in the state of Illinois in Dramatic Interpretation

Junior, Hailey Neels placed 20th in the state of Illinois in Prose Reading and

Senior, Emma Kindred placed 13th in the state of Illinois in Special Occasion Speaking.

Encore was able to represent Moline High School in 3 individual events, as well as PIR at the state level, against over 50 schools across the state of Illinois with at least 18 competitors in each event. Please join us in celebrating our successful season this Friday at Encore’s Dessert Theatre. $5.00 will get you dessert and a performance! Performances start at 7PM in the cafeteria.

Tri-County School Food Service Association Scholarship – One time $200 scholarship for graduating senior planning to major in the area of Food Service, Home Economics, Dietetics, Child Care, Therapist or any degree that involves children as a part of the student’s career. Deadline of March 1st.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Scholarship – Applicant must be a female 2017 graduate of African-American descent with a GPA of at least 3.0. Deadline of March 10th.

Congratulations to the Varsity Academic Team, who took 4th place and a $100 prize in last Saturday’s Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl!  Contributing to that accomplishment were Nathan Fields, Riya Jain, Eli DeWilde, Max Park, and Sam Baker.

Staff and Students–If you or a family member has had experience with mental health treatment, you are invited to attend a Mental Health Community Forum to provide feedback about services in our area.  The event is sponsored by United Way, and it will be held at the Davenport Public Library–Eastern Avenue Branch in Meeting Room B, Monday, March 6th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Let your voice be heard about the gaps in these important services in the Quad Cities.  For more information, please see Mrs. Ryser in the Counseling Center.

A Virtual College Fair for students is being held at collegefairsonline.com.  This is a free opportunity for students to get information from colleges.  Open through February 18th.

Any student who was certified in CPR with Mr. Resler or Mr. Mahieu: The 1st semester CPR cards are in. Stop by B-316 or B-318 before or after school to pick your card up.

The Moline Chess Team competed in the IHSA state chess tournament last weekend.  Anthony Rebello led the team by finishing 29th out of 1,600 competitors.  Other team members were Ethan Blevins, Kier Cook, Grant Estes, Elwood Gupton, Jacob Powell, Karthik Prakash, Edgar Rosales, Brandon Schell, and Lennon West.

Quest Bridge College Prep Scholar Program – Opportunity for outstanding low-income high school juniors to gain early advantage in college admissions. College Prep Scholars are uniquely prepared to gain admission and full scholarships to top-tier colleges through Quest Bridge. Deadline of March 22nd.

League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Scholarship Fund – Various scholarships of up to $2,000 will be awarded to Hispanic students who are enrolled or planning to enroll in accredited 4-year colleges, 2-year colleges or vocational schools in the United States. Deadline of March 31st.

Dean Ritter Trust for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Scholarship – Open to high school seniors who have severe to profound hearing loss, exhibit financial need and plan to attend a technical school or university. Deadline of March 17th.

Kiwanis Key Leader Program – An opportunity for teen leaders in Illinois to learn about leadership, friendship and to grow in areas like team-building and responsibility. The program is being held March 31-April 2. Deadline of March 18th.

There will not be a Gamers Club meeting on Tuesday (tomorrow).

Wooden roses are being sold again today outside the cafeteria during 4th period lunches. The price is $1 for 1 rose, $5 for 6 and $10 for a dozen roses.  Wooden roses will be delivered on Valentine’s Day during 1st, 2nd and 3rd period.

Members of Authentic Voices can check their sign up times on the bulletin board outside the Counseling Center.  Also, Authentic Voices members should also come to the Counseling Center after school to help organize the roses for distribution.

R.I.A. Federal Credit Union – There are five $1,000 scholarships for the 2017-2018 school year. Applicants must be members of the credit union. Deadline of February 24th.

Township Officials of Illinois Scholarship Fund – Applicants are required to write an essay on the role of township government in today’s society and in the future which must include information from an interview with an elected Illinois township official. Deadline of March 1st.

National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) Scott/St Louis Chapter Scholastic Awards – multiple scholarships available to students planning to attend a 4-year or 2-year college or trade certification program. Deadline of March 1st.
