This is a reminder that an all student email has been sent out with a student needs survey. If your teacher allows, please take this time to complete the survey. If not, please take the time to check your school email and complete this survey on your own time before Wednesday.

Natural Helpers will meet today during lunch in room B131.

Ping Pong Club will have its first meeting today after school in room J128.

Attention All Yearbook Staff:  Please attend an important meeting today after school in B201.  We need to begin arranging our weekly section meetings, so we need everyone there in order to select the best work days.  If you cannot be there, please see Ms. Hafner before the meeting.  See you there!

Kaleidoscript will be selling lollipops for the last time today at all lunches. Get yours before they are all gone! All money is due to Mrs. MacLennan by 3:00 today.

This Tuesday, November 1st there will a pharmacist talking about her career in B318 at 3:05. ALL are welcome to attend.  If you have any questions, see Mr. Mahieu.

Any girls who are interested in playing basketball: Girls Basketball Tryouts for freshmen and sophomores are today at 3:15-5:30 in the East Gym. Varsity tryouts are today at 6:00-7:30 in the East Gym and 3:30-5:00 at Wharton Field House.

MISC

Congratulations to all powder puff teams for their sportsmanship and ability to help the Student Hunger Drive raise money and collect cans of food. The sophomores defeated the freshmen by a score of 8-0.  The seniors defeated the juniors by a score of 20 to 6.

Today is the last day of the period 2 can competition.  Thanks to all who donated.

Tomorrow is the dodgeball tournament in the East Gym, starting at 6:30 p.m., with a double elimination format.  If you have a team and want to be involved, turn in your team registration by the end of the day today.

Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. is the boys’ volleyball tournament at Wharton Field House.  Admission to the tournament is a donation of 3 cans or $3. Teams must have their money turned in to the bookstore by the end of the day, Tuesday, to be included in this tournament.  There will be no exceptions.

The following scholarships are available:

Quad City Engineering and Science Council Scholarships – Multiple one-time scholarships for high seniors pursuing a STEM degree at a 4-year college or university.  This has a deadline of January 24, 2017.

American Academy of Art’s Senior Scholarship Competition – Will be held on November 19th and December 3rd — Applicants must be a graduating high school senior interested in attending American Academy of Art and able to attend one of the two event dates to participate in figure and still life drawing sessions.

Booster Bash raffle tickets:  Please return all sold Booster Bash tickets to your coach.  Any unsold tickets need to be returned to your coach as well.

Are you interested in Engineering or nuclear energy?  The Navy has some information for you.  See Mr. Woods in the Counseling Center for more information.

Global Lift Equipment Scholarship – Recipient will be awarded $500 scholarship. Applicants must plan on attending a post-secondary institution in the U.S. or Canada by no later than fall 2017 and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  This has a due date of June 15th.

Lift Parts Express Scholarship – Recipient will be awarded a $500 scholarship. Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enroll at a college or university by the fall of 2017. This has a due date of June 30th.

Our MHS basketball players and Special Olympics basketball players will be playing in an exhibition game to raise money for Special Olympics.  Cost to get in the door is only $1 or one canned good item! Raffle basket tickets are available now in the Learning Grounds Café.  Hope to see you there!

Orange Leaf has extended their 10% percent of receipts until this Sunday.  Put your receipt in the jar marked Moline High School!

Girls who have paid for their powder puff shirts can pick them up in room J128.

Reminder: The Powder Puff game will be at 7:45 this Thursday at Browning Field!

There will be a meeting today after school in Mr. Mahieu’s room, B318 for anyone interested in raising awareness of eating disorders and helping those affected in our community.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be meeting tomorrow morning in room E114 at 7:30 a.m.  All students are welcome to join us.

If you have not already attended the Authentic Voices meeting that was held period 2, you still have a chance to attend the meeting period 6 today in room E204.

There will not be Art Club after school today due to the Empty Bowls event tonight.  Art Club will resume next Tuesday.

Any student that is interested in applying to a scholarship to study abroad should visit www.NSLIforyouth.org   Deadline for this scholarship is October 27.

World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin – For students interested in global issues and building a strong portfolio for college and future careers. Applicants must be between the ages of 16-18, have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school and are in good academic standing. The seminar will be held June 24-30, 2017. This has a due date of May 30th.

Got a Spine Scholarship – Recipient will be awarded a $500 scholarship. Applicants must be attending a college or university on a full-time basis no later than October 2017 and have a GPA of 2.5 or greater during their last academic year. This has a due date of June 2nd.

For any boy interested in trying out for the Moline High School basketball team, there will be a meeting for all levels today at 3:15 in room E204.

Attention All Seniors:  If you haven’t had your senior portrait taken yet, you need have it done by November 1st so that you can be in this year’s yearbook.  The session for your school picture is free, but you can buy pictures if you want.  If you need to schedule an appointment, please contact Photographic Arts at 762-6662.  Make sure you are a part of the 2017 “M.”

Need help with homework?  After school tutoring is available on early release Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in room B325.  Stop in to get the help you need for as long as you need!

William H. Kleinschmidt Scholarship – Applicants must be a senior or former graduate of a high school in Rock Island County and currently live in Rock Island County. Applicants must plan to pursue a degree as a full-time student in a health-related field of study; nursing is preferred. A preference is given for attending college or training in Rock Island County.  However, all students are encouraged to apply.

Hey students- Support two great causes:  Plan to attend the “Swishing Together” event – MHS and Special Olympics basketball players together for an exhibition game!  This event will take place on Wednesday, October 26th at Wharton Fieldhouse.  Doors open at 5:00 and the game begins at 5:30.  Admission is 1.00 or a canned good for the Student Hunger Drive.

Join us for this fun, family friendly event to raise money for MHS Special Olympics.  We will have raffle baskets, face painting, concessions, and fun!  Halftime competitions for great prizes!  Cash donations accepted at the door.

There are only 6 days left of the can competition between classes.  Now is the time to bring in those cans!

The Empty Bowls event is happening Tuesday evening.  Don’t miss it.  Plan to come out eat some great soup and bread and support a great cause!

There are 13 girls who still need to pay the bookstore before the powder puff game.  Please take care of this ASAP.

MHS Students, Families and Staff:  You are invited to attend “Know Resolve” Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention.  These presentations and forums will be open to the public on October 25th or 26th at 6:30 p.m. at Rock Island High School Auditorium.  Each presentation and forum will last for approximately 90 minutes.  The speaker from Detroit will share his personal story, his music, and the fundamentals for suicide prevention.  For more information, please come to the counseling center.

There will be a Teen Summit 2016 “We Are What Matters” for students in grades 9–12 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. October 29th.  It will take place at the Adler Education Center at Genesis Heart Institute 1236 E. Rusholme St. Davenport, Iowa.  This is a free event and breakfast will be provided.  Please come to the Counseling Center for registration information.

Seniors–Black Hawk Field Trip forms are due to the Counseling Center by today to be eligible for this opportunity.

Volunteers for Empty Bowls should have received a note with your assignment for next Tuesday, October 25th.  Please stop by the Counseling Center to confirm your assignment.

Louis F. Bulechek Memorial Scholarship – Applicants must plan to enroll as full-time college students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. Financial need is the main criteria.

Morency Family Scholarship – Applicants must be graduating from high school or receiving their GED certification and must be enrolled in, or have been accepted into an educational institution/program, and be working towards a degree, diploma, certificate of completion, etc.  Preference will be given to those who have been in the foster care system. Preference will also be given to those planning to enroll in a manufacturing related program.

The following scholarships are available:

John R. Kiley Memorial Scholarship – Applicants must have an Iowa residence, OR if an Illinois student, plan to attend an Iowa college or university. Applicants must be beginning or working towards a Bachelor’s degree in any subject.

Kelly Marie McQuate Memorial Scholarship – The scholarship award recipient will be a graduating high school senior who has lost a mother or father, either biological or adoptive. Financial need is the main criteria.

COUNSELING CENTER

Brand Boeshaar Scholarship – Applicants must be graduates of Quad City area high schools pursuing post-secondary school art studies and submit a completed application, high school transcript, two letters of support and a portfolio of 12 works. The program is funded by the Brand Boeshaar Foundation Fund, managed by the Figge Education Department.

Orange Leaf in Moline will be donating 10 percent of their receipts to the Student Hunger Drive.  There are jars at Orange Leaf labeled with the various schools.  Put your receipt in the Moline High School jar!

Need help with homework?  After school tutoring is available on early release Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in room B325.  Stop in to get the help you need for as long as you need!

All junior and senior Powder Puff players, your $16.00 has to be turned in to the bookstore by Tuesday.

We are entering Week 3 of our can drive competition between 2nd period classes!  Students – please give if you are able!  The food collected during the Student Hunger Drive keeps the River Bend Food Bank running for 3 months, or 1/4 of the year!  Did you know that one of the Food Bank’s motto’s is that the expiration date is also the donation date?   Don’t let the expiration date on a can stop you from donating it.  Food is good long past the expiration date, and the Food Bank is very happy to receive this food!

There were 242 pieces of candy in the pickle jar!  The winning guess was from Annie McGuire with 240.  Congratulations! Two other guesses of 245 will also receive a prize!  Jesus Varela and Nathan Berthoud made those guesses.  The 3 winners stop by J128 to receive your prizes.
