WIU is sponsoring a Quad City Teen Leadership Academy on Saturday, March 14th.  Meet teen leaders from across the Quad Cities and learn how to be a leader in our community.  The deadline for registration for this event is March 9th.  See your counselor right away for more information.

Any students, who are interested in planning the River Action Youth Summit to address the needs of the Mississippi River and learn more about environmental issues, please see Mrs. Ryser in the Counseling Center right away.

SPORTS

Any girl interested in soccer must report to the Coolidge gym for practice on Monday, March 2nd from 3:30 to 5:30 P.M.

Softball tryouts are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week.  Freshmen and Sophomores will go from 3:30 to 5:30 and Juniors and Seniors will go from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.  The tryouts will be held in the West Gym.

MISC

The Moline Public Library is hosting a Graphic Novel Workshop on Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:30 p.m. This workshop will introduce students to the history of cartooning, creating a comic strip, publishing, and more. Space is limited and registration is required. Bus passes will be available to registered participants. Call the Moline Library for more information.

If you like to make movies, and money, stop in the Library Media Center for the specifications for a short film contest sponsored by all Quad City area Libraries.  Top prize is $100. All participants will have their film screened at the Premiere Party with free pizza.

Attention juniors: There will be a junior class meeting Period 5 today.  Please report directly to the Auditorium following Period 4.

Check out the Moline Public Library after school for TEEN-ucopia. There’s a variety of video games, board games, and other activities in the Teen Corner every Wednesday after school.

Juniors and seniors–If you did not receive an invitation to attend the National Honor Society application meeting next Wednesday during 5th period, and you have a 3.45 or above unweighted grade point average, please see Mrs. Ryser in the Counseling Center right away.

SPORTS

There will be a brief meeting today after school in room B152 for anyone interested in trying out for baseball this spring.

MISC

Sadie’s tickets are on sale!  You will need an ID for each ticket you buy.  If you are bringing a student from another school, you will need to have a non-student dance application filled out.  These forms are available in the Bookstore.  Tickets are $10.00 each through Feb. 25th.

The Encore! Speech team was able to represent Moline High School by bringing three events to the IHSA State Tournament this last weekend.

Moline High School competed against over 70 schools at the State Tournament and was one of only 3 schools from our section to make it to final rounds.

Abby McNaught competed in Oratorical Declamation placing 4th at Regionals, 3rd in our Section, and finally securing 18th out of the entire State of Illinois.

Christian Frieden and JJ Schrick competed in Humorous Duet Acting, winning the title of Regional and Sectional champions, finishing the season at 8th out of the entire State of Illinois.

Encore’s ensemble of Elane Edwards, Luke Giovanine, Hannah Frye, Ryan Reed, Pubali Kundu, Ethan Johnson, Allissa Krogman, Matt Hayes, Emma Kindred, Aaron Miller, and Adam Sanders competed in Performance in the Round, winning as Regional Champions, placing 3rd in Sectionals, and making it to the State Final Round for the 6th year in a row and placing 4th out of 19 State qualifying teams in PIR for the second year in a row.

Encore! gives out a big thank you to all the students and staff at MHS for their continued support throughout this entire season. If you wish to support Encore! even more, be on the look-out for our upcoming fund-raiser performances. This year’s Dessert Theatre will be on March 6th, Encore’s Improv Night will be in April, and the first annual 24hour Theatre Project will be in May.

Want to win $100? Quad City area libraries are hosting a YouTube Contest for teens. Create a short video and submit it by March 3. Details and entry forms are available at the Moline Public Library.

The Moline Public Library is hosting a Date Safe Program for teens and their parents on Thursday, February 26. Topics covered will include the dynamics of teen dating violence, awareness, prevention and intervention aspects, and what healthy relationships look like. Deadline has been extended to Monday, February 23rd!

There will be a Latino Youth Summit at Black Hawk College for all high school students and their parents on Saturday, February 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Please see your counselor for registration information.

Are you interested in experiencing a college atmosphere, exploring a future career interest, and having an adventure this summer?  Check out the Augustana Summer Academy.  If you have questions, see your counselor!

This Saturday from 6-8pm in the cafeteria will be a Family 50’s fun night as a fundraiser for this year’s musical – Grease! Desserts will be available, there will be raffles, and face painting. All funds will be matched by Modern Woodman of America. Bring the whole family and remember to wear your best 50’s ensemble!

The Kathryn G. Hansen Scholarship is now available to graduating seniors pursuing a degree in a business related field.  Applications may be downloaded from the counseling website.  The due date is February 23.

SPORTS

All Freshmen/Sophomore wrestlers are to attend a quick mandatory meeting today after school in the locker room.

There will be a boy’s tennis informational meeting today in the Cafeteria at 3:15 P.M.

Any girl and/or freshmen basketball girl wanting to join Track & Field may do so.  Track practice is every day after school meeting in the East Gym from 3:30 to 4:45.

Thanks to a generous gift to our Library Media Center from the MHS Class of 1949, a new Maker Station will be opening today during all lunches. The Maker Movement is designed to introduce people to new skills or interests and provide the opportunity to explore and grow as a creator. Zach Wymore will be our Guest Maker today as he demonstrates how to motorize a bunch of balloons with remote control! Stop by the Media Center during your lunch period today.

The Varsity Academic Team earned second place at the tournament in Galesburg last weekend!  Players included Will Fisher, Connor Bivens, Divya Badri, Adrian McDevitt, Tara Krishnan, Ila Mostafa, and Nathan Fields.  Well done!

This St. Valentine’s Day was quite exciting as MHS’s Speech team competed against 21 schools in our Sectional Tournament at Freeport H.S. Among the team members that advanced from our Regional to this Sectional were both Varsity members, as well as many Novice members who were competing in speech for their very first season. Several Encore! members made it to final rounds and of the finalists from MHS, all have earned the opportunity to represent Moline High School in this weekend’s IHSA State Tournament.

Maggie Driscal placed 10th overall in our section in Original Comedy

Abby McNaught placed 9th overall in our section in Original Oratory

Abby McNaught placed 3rd in Oratorical Declamation and will be advancing to the State Tournament

Karen Sancen placed 12th overall in our section in Extemporaneous Speaking

JJ Schrick and Christian Frieden placed 1st as Sectional Champions in Humorous Duet Acting and will be advancing to the State Tournament

Encore’s Performance in the Round placed 3rd and will be advancing to the State Tournament

Please wish the team luck as we compete against schools from all across the state of Illinois at the IHSA State Tournament for Competitive Speech.

The Authentic Voices group is selling real carnations for Valentine’s Day.  The cost is one for $1.50 and 4 for $5.00.  The flowers will be sold today in the hallways leading to the cafeteria.  The flowers will be delivered Friday morning.  Please support our group.

COUNSELING CENTER

Any student who is considering signing up for dual credit English class next year or have already taken two computer dual classes and are planning on signing up for more, need to take the Compass test. Today the test may be taken at 3:10 P.M. in room B325.  Sign-up is in the Counseling Center and outside the Pub in B wing, 2nd floor.
