COUNSELING OFFICE

All students who are planning on taking dual credit English courses or are enrolling in more than one dual credit course must sign up to take the Compass test! Sign up outside the publications office. Tests will be held after school every day Feb. 3rd – 7th in room B325.

 

Sophomores and Juniors: All applications for the Area Career Center, the Trinity College of Nursing and Health Sciences class, and Compass Test scores and/or Black Hawk College ID numbers for Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit classes for next year must be submitted to your counselor no later than February 14th at 8:00 a.m.

 

The LULAC scholarships are now being offered to students of Hispanic heritage. Three different scholarships are being offered with due dates of March 31. Applications are now available on the Counseling website.

 

The PTSA Ellen Roys Scholarship is offered now exclusively to MHS students.  Applicants must have attended MHS for 4 semesters and preference will be given to applicants pursuing the field of education.  Applications may be downloaded from the Counseling website and this scholarship is due March 20, 2013.

 

SPORTS

We have Big Six Champs in the house! That’s right, the girls bowling team won the Western Big Six. Team members are: Hannah Ceurvorst, Aimee Becht, Kiely Miller, Brooke Lodge, and Jessica Howell. Congratulations team!

 

Attention all Bass fishing team members and anyone interested in joining the bass team:  This is a reminder that we will have practice today after school in the cafeteria from 3:25-4:30 and also Saturday morning at Wilson Middle school from 9-11am.  See coach Albrecht if you have questions.

 

MISC

Need a cheap t-shirt to wear?  Homecoming and Powder Puff T-Shirts are on sale for only $7.00 at the book store.  Limited sizes are available, so hurry and get one now!

 

Sadies dance tickets will go on sale Monday February 4th for $10. You and your date’s IDs are both required to buy tickets. If your date does not attend Moline High School, you will need to get a permission slip filled out. Permission slips are available at the bookstore and on the high school website.

 

Attention all staff and students:  The time you have all been waiting for has finally arrived. Order forms are now available for 2013 bass team shirts and sweatshirts. Go to the bookstore or see coach Albrecht for an order form. T-shirt sales is a fundraiser for the bass team, and all proceeds go to helping the team in their quest for their fifth straight trip to state!

 

Students attending all future basketball games will be required to stay off the gym floor during the entire game.  Students may stand and cheer from the second bleacher area.  Anyone not adhering to this request may be asked to leave the Field House.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Congratulations to Tyler Aten, Chelsea Crumbleholme, Brandi Duncan, and Emily Majetic for representing MHS in the Honors All State Music Concerts held this past Saturday in Peoria. The Honors All State program is the highest recognition for high school musicians in the state of Illinois and these outstanding musicians were chosen after rigorous auditions. Special recognition also goes to Emily Majetic for being selected as a soprano soloist in the concert. These achievements represent years of musical study, practice and discipline.  Congratulations on being the “best of the best”!

 

Attention all HOSA members: There will be a very brief, very important meeting today immediately after school in J138. Please try to make it.

Thank you to the staff and students who have already signed up to participate in this year’s Special Olympics Polar Plunge on March 10th. The updated totals for sign-ups are as follows: Seniors and Sophomores lead the pack with 8 each, Juniors – 7, and freshmen and staff each have 6 signed up. We have a grand total of 33 jumpers. There will be a meeting in B218 at 3:00 today for anyone who has signed up or plans to sign up. The purpose of this meeting is to register jumpers online and get donation links set up.

The River Valley Cooperative Scholarship is now available to students pursuing a degree in agriculture or an agricultural related field. Due date is March 1 and applications and full criteria may be downloaded off the Counseling Website.

 

The Ascentra Credit Union is now offering a $1000 scholarship to graduating seniors.  Applicants must answer an essay question and submit a resume.  This scholarship has a due date of March 1 and may be downloaded from the Counseling website.

 

The Society of Italian Americans is now offering a $1000 scholarship to graduating seniors who are related to an Italian family member. Applications are available on the counseling website.  This scholarship has a due date of May 1.

 

Do you like science, math, construction, finance, and doing good things for the people in the community? The Moline Parks department is sponsoring a unique 4 week series to kids ages 12-20 years old. See Mrs. Dexter in the counseling center for details.

The Quad City Negro Heritage Society is now offering a $500 scholarship to senior students.  Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA.  Students may download the application off of the counseling website.  This scholarship has a due date of April 1, 2013.

Tickets are on sale in the MHS Bookstore for the Winter Play, “The Yellow Boat.” This is the touching true story of Benjamin Saar; you’ll laugh a lot, you might cry a little, but you will definitely leave feeling like you’re a better person. Don’t miss this outstanding, fully video-integrated, heart-warming play. There will be four performances: tonight @ 7 PM; Friday @ 7 PM; Saturday @ 2 PM; and Saturday@ 7 PM.  Tickets are $6.00 for students and $8.00 for adults. Buy your tickets in advance at the book store or get them at the door!

Students going on the Italy trip this summer with Ms. Shelton need to meet in her classroom after school today for a short meeting regarding the trip.

Thank you to the staff and students who have already signed up to participate in this year’s

Special Olympic Polar Plunge on March 10th. The data is in and the results of the sign up

by group or grade level is as follows: Staff -3, Freshmen – 2, Sophmores – 5, Juniors – 5, and the group in the lead is seniors with 6. If you’d like to help the number grow for Polar Plunge participants in your group ,or grade, you can still sign up in J108. We are at 21 total participants and our goal is 100. With approximately 2,300 people in this building, we shouldn’t have any problem reaching our goal.

Please plan to join us for the big Plunge on March 10th.

 

Are you hungry after school? You’re in luck! Bring a dollar on Friday and buy a taco in a bag! They will be sold at the “M” and at the south entrance of J-wing.

The Rock Island Arsenal Club is now offering two scholarships: 

1.  The High School Senior Merit Scholarship

2.  The Continuing Merit Scholarship

Both applications are available on the Counseling Website and have a due date of March 15th.

All boy golfers who have not turned in golf bags need to meet Coach Sergeant by the pool today after school. This is MANDATORY!!

This Saturday, Augustana College is hosting a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King. It’s a musical tribute, taking place Saturday at 6 p.m. at Centennial Hall at Augustana College. Everybody is welcome.

Each year in late February and March, thousands of brave souls around the state take a leap into freezing water to support the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge. We would like to see at least 100 people from Moline High School, students and staff, join together to support our 20 MHS Special Olympic athletes and participate in our area Polar Plunge on Sunday, March 10th. Please plan to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 3:00 in the MHS cafeteria. Refer any questions to Mrs. Heiar in J108.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS 

Congratulations to the Varsity Academic Team for their 6-2 record at Macomb last Saturday.  The team tied for first in the consolation bracket after losing only to the host school in the morning rounds.  Senior Anthony Krone was named to the all-tournament team.   Other team members were Anu Balakrishnan, Joseph Aumuller, Pranav Puri, Eric Sheidler, Steffen Timmer, and Ben Wolf.  This coming Saturday the Maroons will compete at Rock Island with two teams.  

 

Authentic Voice Club is meeting today in E204. If you are unable to attend, stop by Mrs. Hoover’s office to pick up an Authentic Voices conference registration form if you’re interested in going on Jan. 31st.
